FINDING JOY IN LOCKDOWN

With a third lockdown upon us, no way of escaping to the sun, and at least another three months of winter left before we can feel some warmth and enjoy the lighter evenings, it would be quite normal to experience low mood or even feelings of despair.

It’s at times like this when all the ‘stuff’ that we’ve done such a great job on repressing and pushing down, comes up to surprise you! If you don’t feel ready to engage in therapy there are other ways to bring some joy into your life during these testing times.

Here are my top 5 tips to finding joy in lockdown:

  1. Despite the cold weather and lack of light – get outdoors. Whether it’s an early morning walk with a chest torch, running at lunchtime or getting outside with the family on the weekend, whatever you do make the time to connect with the outdoors and find joy in nature.
  2. Set some positive intentions – what are those things that you never ‘have enough time to do’? Use any time you may have gained during the lockdown to explore what you really want. Maybe you’d like to learn to speak a different language or to sing? Have fun and let yourself play.
  3. Read that book that has been sat by your bed collecting dust for months! Make yourself a cuppa and curl up on the sofa, or take yourself off to bed early and completely immerse yourself in a good book. Not only is it a wonderful escape, it’s a great way to relax and unwind.
  4. Try out some new recipes – here’s your opportunity to buy all the ingredients (all food stores remain open) and pour some love and energy into making the food you really want to eat. Perhaps you want to try a vegan recipe, or eat more healthy?
  5. Journal – if there is one new thing to add to your day it is the process of journaling. There does not have to be any reason, just write, allow your thoughts and feelings to unfold onto the page. This is a great way to get to know yourself better and start to see beyond the things that can hold you back.

I really hope that these can inspire you to make the most of this time. Do let me know if you give them a go…
